What if the cancer treatments doctors prescribed more than 2,000 years ago work better than todays drugs with few or no side effects?

What if your doctor saw the patient’s cancer as the “uppermost branch” rather than the “root” of the problem?

And best of all: What if this ancient treatment could improve your odds of survival by 70 percent?

Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, with an estimated 9.6 million people dying of cancer in 2018. It is groups of uncontrolled, cell proliferative, and chronic diseases, which pose an immediate threat to the life of patients with huge healthcare expenses. Surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy are now the most mainstreams of cancer therapy coupled with the emerging targeted and cancer immunotherapies To a certain extent, the growth and spread of cancer were controlled and the survival time of patients was prolonged by these methods, but the overall efficacy and many of the associated side effects were intolerable. In some cases, these treatments are effective, but the therapeutic effects did not last long, or cancer cells gained resistance to chemical drugs, limiting their further use. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a more ideal drug therapeutics or adjuvant treatment strategy for cancer.

Chinese herbs have demonstrated efficacy in the treatment and prevention of cancer through thousands of years of practice. As a natural medicine, it has the advantages of low adverse reaction and low toxicity. There are over 5000 herbs registered in the Chinese Herbal register, which had been used of the treatment of a range of illnesses; about 400 have varying degrees of therapeutic effects on cancers, such as those of the lung, liver, brain, stomach, prostate, and breast. The mechanisms may relate to the inhibition of cancer growth, reduction of metastasis and invasion, promotion of cancer cell apoptosis, and enhancement of immunity. Chinese herbal medicine is increasingly used as an alternative to mainstream cancer treatments. Combination therapy with the use of herbs had produced more effective and lasting therapeutic effects. Furthermore, herbs can sensitize the body to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, increase the protection of normal tissues, and prevent tumor metastasis and recurrence. Chinese herbal medicine can not only inhibit local lesions but also regulate the whole body to eliminate cancers, without damage to normal cells. In addition, Chinese herbal medicine can reduce the side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, alleviate insomnia, depression, and fatigue, and significantly improve the quality of life. Therefore, herbs have unique advantages in improving the quality of life and extending the survival period of patients

The National Cancer Institute confirmed its effectiveness. When the results came in, the NCI researchers were amazed…

In their experiments, cells from six of the deadliest cancers were knocked out ¨C lung cancer, colon cancer, leukemia, ovarian cancer, kidney cancer and melanoma. In every test almost all of the cancer cells were dead. Wiped out within just 48 hours of being exposed one little-known cancer treatment Chinese doctors may use about 133 different herbs to treat lung cancer. These herbs decrease cancer symptoms in 85 out of a hundred patients.

What’s the biggest symptom they help erase? Pain!

In addition, the right selection of Chinese herbs can reduce tumor size by 38 percent, improve quality of life, and prevent relapse. Here are few of the herbs Chinese doctors most commonly use to heal lung cancer. Many are beneficial against other cancers too.

LingZhi other name reishi Ganoderma lucidum,

Lingzhi, other name is a kind of fungus with both food and medicine. Besides its good health care function, Lingzhi can also manage diabetes and improve cardiovascular and anti-aging pharmacological effects. The active components of Lingzhi include polysaccharides, triterpenoids, proteins, amino acids, sterols, and alkaloids. The polysaccharide is composed of three single sugar chains, with a spiral three-dimensional configuration of dextran; the three-dimensional configuration is similar to deoxyribonucleic acid DNA and RNA and is the most effective component of Lingzhi. Lingzhi is generally taken as a single drug, as a tonic drink, or food to take.

Astragalus

One of the most widely used herbs in traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus root boosts your immune system and helps prevent infection.

In the cancer world, it stops tumor growth, thwarts tumor spreading, and reduces the immune-suppressing side effects of chemotherapy. Astragalus increases your T-cell levels ¨C and they in turn kill cancer cells.

Astragalus improves quality of life for people with non-small cell lung cancer. It enhances the effects of platinum-based chemotherapy treatments, such as cisplatin, by counteracting the damage to the immune system caused by chemo, according to research by the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. For the best results, the patients in the study took astragalus while receiving chemotherapy.

In addition to killing cancer cells and reducing the toxic effects of chemotherapy, astragalus protects your kidneys and lungs from auto-antibody attacks.

It also heals burns, protects from heart disease, fights the common cold, increases stamina, and lowers blood pressure. As an adaptogen, it increases your general resistance to stress and disease.

In recent years, Astragalus has attracted much attention because of its good anticancer activity. AM has an obvious inhibitory effect on cervical cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and leukemia. AM can not only be taken as a single medicine but also used to synergistically enhance the efficacy of cisplatin. Therefore, it can be used as one of the research directions of anticancer herbs in the future.

Gan Cao - licorice root

Gan cao (licorice root) acts as an expectorant, accelerating mucus secretion. It helps relieve coughs and shortness of breath. This is of particular benefit to lung cancer patients.

Several components in gan cao ¨C Licochalcone-A, glabridin, and licocoumarone ¨C stop cancer growth and kill breast cancer cells, prostate cancer cells, and leukemia cells.

Overall, the herb helps cleanse and refresh your body to keep you younger and healthier.

Traditional Chinese medicine doctors often prescribe gan cao in combination with other herbs. Gan cao aids their absorption and increases their effectiveness.

Huang Qin

Also known as Baikal skullcap or Chinese skullcap, this Chinese herb prevents secondary tumors from forming in lung cancer patients.

Huang qin (scientific name Scutellaria baicalensis) kills human lung cancer cells without damaging healthy cells. A component named wogonin triggers cancer cell death while leaving healthy cells undamaged.

Huang qin prevents tumor cell reproduction, especially for A549 cells. In this way, it stops tumor growth and can dissolve tumors completely. The herb also decreases inflammation.

Besides helping lung cancer patients, huang qin also treats digestive system cancers, liver cancer, breast cancer, and chorioepithelioma (a malignant fast-growing tumor that forms from trophoblastic cells, the cells that help an embryo attach to the uterus and help form the placenta).

Tumeric, Curcuma longa (Jiang Huang in Chinese)

Turmeric, is a kind of perennial herb. Its main active ingredient is curcumin which has been used as a spice and pigment. Curcumin is a kind of diketone compound that has few side effects in humans. As a therapeutic agent, it is also used for the treatment of cancers and chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Turmeric is often taken as a single decoction.

Wormwood - Qing Hao Su (Artemisinin)

According to studies published in Life Sciences, Cancer Letters and Anticancer Drugs, artemesinin, a derivative of the wormwood plant commonly used in Chinese medicine, can kill off cancer cells, and do it at a rate of 12,000 cancer cells for every healthy cell. By itself, artemisinin is about 100 times more selective in killing cancer cells as opposed to normal cells. The new artemisinin compound is 34,000 times more potent in killing the cancer cells as opposed to their normal cousins. So the tagging process appears to have greatly increased the potency of artemisinin’s cancer-killing properties

Back in 2008, Researchers at the University of Washington produced a unique compound involving the Traditional Chinese Medicine, artemisinin, or Sweet Wormwood

Cancer cells like iron – they contain far more than healthy cells do-and use it to maintain their high rates of cell division. When they need some they make a special protein‘ signal’ on their surfaces, and the body’s metabolic systems deliver the iron to the signal, wrapped in a protein package because free-floating iron in the blood stream would be quite toxic. The cancer cells then take in the whole iron ‘package’.

Artemisinin itself attacks the energy production systems of pathogens – about a third of all parasites, yeasts, and most ‘bad’ bacteria such as E coli. Artemisinin also attacks cancer cells. It kills about 100 cancer cells for every healthy cell in laboratory experiments – that’s about 10 times more effective than the average chemotherapy drug. In science, artemisinin has an endoperoxide capacity, that interacts with heme, especially in situations that increase iron in cancer cells.

THUNDER GOD VINE AND PANCREATIC CANCER

Results of a preclinical study in engineered cells and animals suggest triptolide, a key ingredient in the Chinese herb Tripterygium wilfordii, or thunder god vine, can kill cancer cells and potentially improve outcomes for patients with pancreatic cancer.

Thunder god vine is native to China, Japan and Korea and has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries to treat joint pain, swelling, inflammation and fever, as well as autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Goji Berries, Shisandra and Sea Buckthorn

Some of the richest sources of cell protective anti-oxidants, some with potential anti-cancer activity  are found in Chinese Herbal Medicines, especially in medicinal fruits and berries. Here are three of the most potent anti-oxidant packed medicinal fruits. In China, food is often made into medicine by incorporating medicinal herbs into soups and sauces and traditional dishes. These berries are often added to teas and beverages as well as for their healing and protective benefits. The deep red/orange fruits are packed with a broad spectrum of protective anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals. They are not only healing but also nutritive.

Lycium chinense Fruit, Gou Qui Zi, commonly known as Goji Berry or Wolfberry is found all over Asia and also in Europe

Schizandra Chinensis Fruit, Wu Wei Zi found in China, Japan, Korea and Russia. Not only is Schizandra packed with red/orange carotenoids, but the fruit also contains small amounts of Selenium, Zinc and thymoquinone, all known to be important in regulating cells and supporting healthy function. Schizandrin, another  active component has also been shown to have an impact on regulating how cells grow and divide, potentially offering anti-cancer effects. Wu Wei Zi is translated as Five Flavor Fruit, indicating that, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, this fruit contains a perfect balance of the elements in nature, hence it is highly valued for its health enhancing and harmonizing properties.

Sea Buckthorn Fruit, Sha Ji (Hippophae rhamnoides) is found widely in Asia and in some parts of Europe. It is cultivated in China for its medicinal and cosmetic value due to the very high concentrations of carotenoids in this deep orange fruit.  Sea Buckthorn also contains high levels of Vitamin C, Vitamin E and plant antioxidants called  flavonols.  Sea buckthorn berries can be eaten, made  into pies and jams. The juice is used as a nutrient rich beverage also to make sauces and syrups. Sea buckthorn oil is deeply nourishing and protective to the skin when used topically.   Some research has shown that sea buckthorn supports anti-inflammatory function.

Vitamin B17

B17and cancer treatment has shown positive effects in helping to induce apoptosis and prevent the spread of cancer cells. Vitamin B17 is a chemical compound found in apricot pits as well as in the seeds of apples, plums, peaches, pears, grapes, cherries and berries.

How does B17 cancer treatment work?

According to Dr. Krebs, B17 releases a powerful cytotoxin which is hydrogen cyanide. It also releases benzaldehyde, another potent cytotoxin. Cytotoxins are “chemical weapons.” They are used by killer T-cells to damage infected cells. When viruses attack healthy cells and “trick” them into replicating the virus, cytotoxins “kill” the infected cells so they cannot infect other healthy cells.

An enzyme called rhodanese or thiosulfate transulfurase converts cyanide into the “harmless thiocyanate.” Thiocyanate is a “human metabolite”, “pseudohalide anion” and a “sulfur molecular entity.” One study shows that it has a “protective effect” on the lungs in cystic fibrosis and an “anti-inflammatory effect in endothelial cells, a neuronal cell line, and a pancreatic beta-cell line.”

The neoplastic cells then suffer “lethal cytotoxicity” due to the selective lag of the undetoxified cyanide and unoxidized benzaldehyde while the somatic cells are left unaffected.

One study noted that amygdalin may “protect against cervical cancer.” Based on tests on human cells, the researchers found that it can induce apoptosis or programmed cell death, which is crucial to prevent the spread of cancer cells. Two other studies indicated its potential to “fight bladder cancer” by blocking the growth of the tumor. Refer www.verywellhealth.com/laetrile-amygdalin-89572

Some clinical tests have also shown that B17 “reacts well” with other vitamins including A, C, E, B-15 as well as with pancreatic enzymes and other nutrients to weaken malignant cells. Refer www.livestrong.com/article/22128-vitamin-b17-benefits/

Important note: Before using B17 as part of cancer treatment, consult with a medical or health professional.

At The LifeCo Clinic, it is one of the metabolic and intravenously administered therapies, together with vitamin C, glutathione and curcumin, among others. These are offered as part of the healing center’s integrative cancer care program.

Chinese herbs part of a larger system

Herbal medicine is one of the most common alternative therapies used by cancer patients. Doctors who use Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) do not use these herbs in isolation, though.

Instead, TCM doctors most often use these herbs in combination with each other. Although there are more than 3,000 different medicinal herbs in TCM, 300 to 500 are commonly used. Nearly all Chinese herbal formulas I’ve seen contain a long list of ingredients, many of them unknown to me. The formulas tend to be complicated.

They try to address three main functions in TCM:

  1. Treat acute diseases and conditions

  2. Heal chronic conditions

  3. Maintain daily health and wellness through balance in the body

Mechanisms of Core Chinese Herbs against Colorectal Cancer: A Study Based on Data Mining and Network Pharmacology (hindawi.com)

There were 196 different Chinese herbs used in all prescriptions, and the frequency analysis of herbs revealed that the ten most frequently used Chinese herbs were Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai-Zhu), Poria (Fu-Ling), Radix Astragali (Huang-Qi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan-Cao), Codonopsis Radix (Dang-Shen), Coicis Semen (Yi-Yi-Ren), Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chen-Pi), Hedyotis Diffusae Herba (Bai-Hua-She-She-Cao), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang-Gui), and Scutellariae Barbatae Herba (Ban-Zhi-Lian),

Discussion

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is becoming more and more popular in cancer treatment as a treatment modality or as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Conventional chemotherapy and radiation therapy not only kill cancer cells but also cause many side effects to patients. There were also associations with chronic pain, fatigue, and depression. In China, at least a high percentage of cancer patients opt for traditional Chinese medicine to reduce side effects. The Chinese herbal medicine administration method has been continuously improved for thousands of years, and now, it is mainly based on powder, decoction, and injection.

Besides, topical medication is also a good choice, which maintains anticancer drugs in high concentration and long-lerm effect on cancer tissue. Our research found that Chinese herbal medicine can change the gene expression of cancer cells. Similar results have been achieved in animals. However, it is not enough to confirm the therapeutic effect of Chinese herbs on cancer. Further trials or clinical trials are needed to prove its efficacy. We speculate that these mechanisms may be related to the role of Chinese herbal medicine in the human body and hope to provide a theoretical basis for future clinical trials. In addition to the ten herbs mentioned above, other Chinese herbs and their preparations, such as Radix isatidis, Pinellia ternata, and Taxus chinensis, have also been recognized by the world in the treatment of cancer. These herbs are widely distributed and more readily available to cancer patients. And the price is much lower than common anticancer drugs, which is affordable to patients.

The usage method is important for the application of Chinese herbal medicine. The correct usage of Chinese herbs can double the effect of cancer therapy with half the effort, while excessive use may have adverse effects on the human body. It has been reported that OD causes acute kidney damage in the treatment of cervical cancer. The reason is the renal toxicity caused by long-term use of OD in the common dose, which improved after a period of discontinuation. Some ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine can also cause drug-induced liver damage. The hepatotoxicity of most traditional Chinese medicines is positively correlated with dose. Different processing methods also affect the level of drug toxicity. Reasonable compatibility and the scientific method should be adopted to reduce its toxicity as far as possible. The decoction used in traditional Chinese medicine is diluted, and the toxicity of the medicine is reduced. Both traditional Chinese medicine tablets and injections have undergone long-term toxicity tests, and patients should follow the doctor’s advice or instructions when using them. In short, the vast majority of Chinese herbal medicine, if used correctly, does not produce significant side effects.
